This article is all about Malayattoor, which is a pure pilgrimage destination in Kochi.

Malayattor- The Pilgrim Centre


Malayattur is situated 5kms away from the bank of periyar in kaladi (Ernakulam district). St.Thomas church is situated in top of kurish hill which has a height of about 2000from the base. Malayattur is an important pilgrim place of catholic in Kerala.
Malayattur Thirunnal is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter.

Every year thousands of pilgrims are visiting Malayattur. The soul of St.Thomas
is spread all over here. Every pilgrim visit Malayattur to get the endument of Jesus’s favorite disciple St.Thomas.

It is believed that the place was once visited by St.Thomas, knowing about the threat to his life, came to Malayattur for meditation. He spends 6 days and 6 nights Malayattur without anybody. He sat on a rock cliff and raised his hands to sky prayed to lord and drew a cross in the rock and kissed it. At the time there appeared the pure mother with her child Jesus and endued St.Thomas.

There was a noble story behind this place. For years this hill remained untouched. One day some hundreds reached the hill, due to darkness in the night they stayed there. By hearing a noise in hey woke up in midnight. They got astonished seeing bright light coming from the huge rock. They slowly walk towards the rock. They saw a weapon lying in the rock and a cross rise up. All these noble stories makes it a great spot for pilgrimage.

What to See in Malayattor


The Marthoma Mandapam in Malayattor is an attractive building to visit. The entire structure is based on Greco-Indian architecture. The building is the greatest sign of St Thomas’s 20 years of missionary works in South India. The Golden Cross is another fascinating feature. The origin of this cross was based on the noble storey related to Malayattor. The miraculous water spring is another attracting feature. The spring is also having its noble belief related to St. Thomas. We can also see an ancient Chapel struck by the elephants which is located at Kusishumudi. It was believed that, it was attacked by the tuskers in the past.

Accessing Malayattor


Malayattor is situated about 47 kms from Kochi. The nearest airport available is Nedumbassei Airport of Kochi. The nearest Railway Station is Alway Railway Station. KSRTC Bus services are always available from Kochi Airport and Railway Station to Malayattor.
