There is mythological story connected with this temple. One of the pandava princes Arjuna the mighty one , was doing penance for Lord Shiva tpo appear before him. The Lord wanted to test Arjuna a little more appeared as a hunter Kirata and shot down a boar who was a demon in disguise. At the same time Arjuna also shot the boar and there was a severe argument as to who had killed the boar first. The boar was in fact the Demon Mokasura and his original form was revealed as he was killed.
As the dispute between Kirata and Arjuna continued, it led to a war between them. Arjuna was vanquished and when he no longer could get up he made a lingam out of the mud and started praying Lord Shiva with flowers. Arjuna realised who Kirata was, when he saw the flowers he had put on the Lingam falling on to the hunter's head. The Lord Pleased with arjuna and his devotion appeared before him as Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi and gave him the Pasupathastra he had asked for.
After a longtime a boy named Devalan came to the place. He was a victim of curse and was searching for a place to pray Lord Shiva for Moksha. He found the Lingam created by Arjuna and took it with him to pray. But the villagers harassed him. he tried to lift the Lingam and go to another place but couldn't move the lingam which seemed to be fixed there. Later when the temple was constructed this Lingam was placed as such in the northern part of the Ernakulathappan temple.
